i dont really agree with this but its the official ruling i guess. it wouldnt be in the string section because there are chairs there and a piano is something u dont hold >.< mallets arent percussion but theyre still placed next to them.
also you dont hit everything in persussion... i.e. maracas.

Unless it's a piano concerto, in which case the orchestra fans around the piano
So while it technically is a "hybrid", the general consensus among orchestral music types is that a piano is a percussion instrument.
Even at a rudimentary level of physics the piano must be considered percussion, because this family of instruments is defined by sound produced by hitting an object to vibrate it, i.e. the hammers that hit the piano strings.

Ever seen the movie August Rush? The kid in that film plays the guitar with a variety of different hammer-on and hammer-ing techniques, rarely strumming the guitar. This is considered to be a unique style of playing dubbed percussive guitar. In fact, an instrument is only truly considered a string instrument when it is played by strumming with a pick or a bow; when someone is plucking a fiddle, or tapping a guitar, they are considered to be playing a percussion instrument insofar as they continue that style of play.
